Tax Clinic 2024 - Volunteers Recruitment

 

Do you want to make a great impact on the community while learning and practicing simple tax returns? Then sign up as a volunteer! Volunteers come from all backgrounds, including students, lawyers, engineers, healthcare professionals, CPAs, and newcomers. 

By taking part in this great experience, you will help members of the community to benefit from all the deductions and tax credits available.

As a volunteer, you will receive online training provided jointly by the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Quebec, as well as all the support needed to help you complete simple income tax returns.Come join us; you’ll be in good company.

Important dates

January 30th, 2024 – Deadline to register as a volunteer with CRA

January 30th, 2024 – Deadline to apply for EFILE with CRA

Date to be determined – Tax prep training (either virtual or in person)

March 23rd, 2024, to March 24th, 2024 – Tax clinic (location to be confirmed)

VOLUNTEER AS A TAX PREPARER

On a tax clinic day, you will prepare and file tax returns. This is a great opportunity for you if you:

  • Want to learn and practice personal tax returns

  • Are customer service oriented

  • Speak an asian language (an asset)

You must be available on these dates:

  • A virtual or face-to-face tax training around end of February or beginning of March 2024 (To be confirmed)

  • March 23, 2024 to March 24, 2024 for the tax clinic

You must also:

  • Have a Windows PC (Mac OS, Chromebook, and smartphones/tablets are not compatible with the software)

  • Meet the EFILE requirements

    • Generally, this means that your personal tax file is up-to-date both federally and provincially.

 

HOW TO APPLY AS A TAX PREPARER

You must complete steps 1 to 3 before January 30th, 2024

  1. Register as a volunteer (that will file electronically through EFILE, or electronically through EFILE and by paper) under the federal Community Volunteer Income Taxv.

  2. Apply EFILE or Renew EFILE

Please be advised that a RepID is now required for all EFILE registrations or renewals

  • If you already have a RepID, you must provide it when you renew your account.

  • If you do not have a RepID, you can obtain one by registering with Represent a Client.

  • Under the “Yearly renewal” section, click on “sign in”.

  • Sign in with your current EFILE number and password. If you lost your EFILE number or password, do not file a new application using the “Register for EFILE" link. Contact your for EFILE Helpdesk assistance.

  • Fill out the EFILE renewal information and click on ”Submit”.

  • Once your renewal request is received, you will be redirected to an EFILE account renewal confirmation page containing your newly assigned password and the contact information for the EFILE Helpdesk you should call if you have any issues or questions.

  1. Apply as a volunteer for the YCPA tax clinic

  2. Wait for an email from CRA-ARC confirming your EFILE is activated. See below example of the email. This normally takes 4-6 weeks.Graphical user interface, text, application, email

  3. Once you receive the above email, please forward a copy of the email to taxclinic@ycpa.ca to advise us that your application has been approved by CRA

  4. Wait for a letter (by mail) from Revenu Québec with your Québec NetFile code. If you have not received your NetFile code after 2 weeks, contact us.

    • You must remember your Quebec NetFile code for tax clinic.

 

VOLUNTEER AS NON-TAX TASKS / SUPPORT ROLE

Yes, although we encourage everyone to prepare tax returns, we also need a few volunteers as interpreters, greeters, administrators, or screeners.

If you are interested in helping out with the above, simply indicate so on the registration form.
